Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

Renewable heat incentive (RHI)The domestic RHI is a Government scheme designed to encourage householders to install renewable energy heating systems in place of fossil fuel systems (gas, oil, coal, LPG).

Daikin 8KW Monoblock Air Source Heat PumpWhat is eligible?

Eligible technologies are:

  • Heat pumps (air-, ground-, or water-source)
  • Biomass boilers
  • Solar thermal water heating

how does it work?

Daikin Altherma Air Source Heat Pump - exploded viewIn order to qualify for RHI payments you must have your MCS accredited system designed and installed by an MCS approved installer - who will ensure that the system is RHI compliant.

You will then need to apply to Ofgem to claim your payments.  You will also need to have the following surveys in place when you apply:

  • an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) that has been produced within 2-years of the installation date.
  • The EPC must not include any recommendation for cavity wall insulation or loft insulation.  If it does then these actions need to be addressed prior to the installation and another EPC obtained to demonstrate that they have been cleared.

Quarterly, index-linked payments are made based upon the amount of renewable energy generated. The size of these payments is calculated from the deemed heating and hot water energy consumption figures stated EPC.
